Does anyone else dislike grocery shopping as much as I do? It seems like no matter what, I always find myself wandering around looking for that final item on my list. Usually it’s some kind of abstract health food item or for some reason I always have trouble finding canned pumpkin. It just never seems to be where I think it should be! When I was shopping for Thanksgiving last year, I needed cranberry sauce for a dish I was making, and every single can of cranberry sauce had high fructose corn syrup. We know now that this is a red flag, and as a health coach I just couldn’t bring myself to serve it, even during a gluttonous holiday like Thanksgiving. (Yes, I know it’s easy to make, but when hosting a holiday sometimes you just have to take shortcuts!). I finally found some healthier options in the special health food aisle, but this really bothered me. Why not just put the “health” foods with all the “regular” foods? Why keep them hidden and hard to find for the average Joe doing their grocery shopping? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: The Grocery Store Game. The lengths they’ve taken to make us unaware shoppers do exactly what they want is actually a bit impressive. From “non-sale” sales to strategic product placement, they’ve created an expert-level game to keep us spending money and buying the things “they” (aka the food manufacturers) want us to buy. But we’re on to them! And in today’s video, I’ll share some “cheats” to help you win this game. I’m telling you – it’s like the adult version of the board game Candy Land out there! With this knowledge of how to win the grocery store game, we can keep our money and health in tact. I can’t promise it will make grocery shopping any more fun (although I must say the music is quite enjoyable these days), but at least we can confidently shop, knowing the Grocery Store Sirens cannot seduce us!
